Fortis Undis

"Brave at Sea"

My name is James Twomey and I am the Devon based artist behind Fortis Undis driftwood sculptures.
Through my choice of subject matter and materials I aim to fuse my love of nature with my preference for more contemporary and rustic art.

The driftwood that I use is collected from the beaches of North Devon (South West England) and Kerry (South West Ireland) where I spend my time walking and surfing.

All sculptures are 100% handmade by myself. The nature of the materials and techniques that I use means that no two pieces are the same... subsequently each piece represents a totally unique piece of artwork.

The Concrete Sculpture:

Concrete sculptures are cast from original clay figures before being detailed by hand.

Each piece is painted before being lightly distressed to create a weathered effect.

Additional features of each sculpture
(including wood/shells) are then carefully attached before the finished sculpture is lightly varnished.

The Driftwood Base:

The driftwood that I use in my sculptures is treated by cleaning, light bleaching and sanding. A range of finishes are available (wax, polish, varnish).
